Apprentice Community Organizer Job Description

BIO is an organization of congregations and other member groups who, grounded in faith, work together for greater justice and a better quality of life for all in the Berkshires. We do this by building community across lines of race, ethnicity, income, religion, and geography, developing the leadership skills of those directly affected by these issues, and taking action on matters of shared concern.

We’re seeking an Apprentice Community Organizer to support the Lead Organizer with organizing and administrative duties. We expect that approximately 5 out of 20 hours per week will need to be on-site at our office (175 Wendell Avenue, Pittsfield), and the rest may be accomplished remotely, with appropriate technology.

Responsibilities:

Accountable to BIO Lead Organizer.

 

Community Organizing:

  • Participate in staff and leadership development opportunities offered by InterValley Project (IVP), including IVP Organizer Meetings and Leadership Institutes when possible.

  • Assist with research and power analyses related to issues of social and economic justice.

  • Assist with recruitment of leaders in local congregations, through 1:1 conversations, house meetings, and action campaigns.

  • Alongside the Lead Organizer, staff organizing campaigns on economic and social justice issues, including, transportation, immigrant, and racial justice.

  • Support BIO issue team and committee leaders.

  • Work with Lead Organizer and Executive Council to help the organization achieve its goals. This may include assisting with grassroots fundraising, grant research, and proposal writing.

  • Assist with email and telephone communication, including reminder calls for meetings and events.

 

Administrative Duties:

  • Assist with maintaining up-to-date contact list and organizational database.

  • Executive Council and Issue Teams

  • Digitize sign-in sheets from events

  • Sync donor database, email newsletter, and Google contact lists

  • Support Communications Team

  • Assist with newsletter publication (every other month).

  • Update and monitor website.

  • Administer social media accounts.

  • Train or arrange technology training for Communication Team leaders as needed.

  • General filing and office management

  • Replenish office supplies.

  • Assist with meeting logistics, including reserving space and arranging food, transportation, childcare, or interpretation, as needed.

  • Read, archive, and organize BIO media appearances.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Strong computer skills, particularly with Google Drive and MS Word. Excel, Wix (web platform), and Zoom skills preferred.

  • Strong writing skills.

  • Interest in social and economic justice.

  • Experience working with diverse communities; bilingual in Spanish a plus.

  • Team-building and communication skills.

  • Ability to oversee a variety of administrative and management tasks.
